Kitagawa Utamaro: The Master of Female Beauty in Ukiyo-e
Biography
Kitagawa Utamaro (circa 1753-1806) is one of the greatest masters of ukiyo-e, famous for his portraits of elegant and refined women. Active in Edo (present-day Tokyo), he revolutionizes the art of bijin-ga (representation of feminine beauties) by finely capturing the expressions and psychology of his models. His work, refined and delicate, strongly influences both Japanese and Western art.
